Cambodia and Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to intellectual property cooperation following a meeting between Commerce Minister Cham Nimul and Korea's Minister of Intellectual Property, Kim Yong Sun, in Geneva. The two sides met to review progress on the Cambodia-Korea IP Work Plan 2025-2027, which covers trademark administration, IP protection, and capacity building. Both ministers expressed support for deepening bilateral cooperation in the field of intellectual property.
Korea has been one of Cambodia's most consistent international partners in IP development. Over recent years, Korean institutions have supported Cambodia through training programmes, capacity building for officials, and technical assistance for the digitalisation of IP administration. This cooperation has contributed to the modernisation of Cambodia's trademark and patent systems and to the wider goal of building a functioning national IP ecosystem.
The focus on trademark administration is particularly relevant for businesses. Trademarks make up the large majority of IP filings in Cambodia, and improvements in examination, registration, and administration have a direct effect on rights holders. Continued cooperation on trademark systems should help improve the speed, consistency, and reliability of trademark protection in the country.
The meeting also reflects Cambodia's broader strategy of developing its IP system through international partnerships rather than in isolation. By working with established IP offices such as Korea's, Cambodia is able to draw on experience, technology, and training that would otherwise take much longer to develop domestically. This approach has been a recurring feature of Cambodia's IP policy in recent years.
